This book examines the need for telecommunications-based languages services in response to the emerging communications environment and describes how teletranslation services can be developed. Today the economies of the world are moving to a single integrated system. While telecommunications technology has played a crucial role in this globalisation process, the realisation of reliable, fast and easily accessible communications technologies highlights stubborn language and cultural barriers. Now that technical problems are largely solved, the real problem of global communication is emerging - and it is immense. During the last decade, the translation industry has progresively adopted information technology. but in spite of these modernisations, demand for language service is constantly outstripping the capability of the translation operators to meet customers' expectations for shorter time-frames to match the increasing speed at which information can be extchanged. Teletranslation brings the translation operator and the customer together in a global network which in turns links worldwide language expertise (human and machine. In doing so, it will help overcome many otherwise insoluble language problems, making genuine 'global communication' a reality.
